The Plastic Fantastics

For portraiture though, I would say that Sony 85mm f/2.8 will make more sense than Minolta 50mm f/1.7. Wide open in both lenses, and even with larger max aperture, one would have to get closer to the subject for similar isolation (DOF) with the 50mm.

IMO, every Sony DSLR/SLT owner should consider the three plastic fantastics, and especially the 35mm (for walk around) and the 85mm (for short tele/portraits). Although, I wish the 85mm were a stop faster (or there were an 85mm version of the STF).

The real advantage with Minolta 50/1.7 is price. It is a very good lens and one can save enough to buy another lens, for the price of one new lens. But it also relies on in-body motor (compared to SAM). Sony has been willing to continue supporting that for AF, but at some point it may not. We can hope it doesn’t come to that.
