You cannot really go wrong with the 55-200mm and the 50mm f1.8 as budget choices. Perhaps you want to wait till the 55-300mm comes out. It'll be probably a bit more expensive and bigger than the 55-200mm but when photographing animals the 200-300mm makes a lot of difference.

Personally I use a Sigma 70mm f2.8 macro as portrait lens. It is not really a budget lens, although you sort of get two lenses for the that price since it does great close-up/macro shots too. It is really really sharp and produces one of best bokehs I have come across. The Tamron 60mm f2 macro should be considered for the same reasons too.
