35L or 50L as walkaround lens

35L is the easy choice (samples)

You get primes to shoot them wide or nearly wide open. Here the 50L does not have a floating element which is a problem at certain settings were you pictures may be out of focus. There are workarounds, but already for this reason I suggest you go for the 35L or at least rent the 50L to make sure its not a problem for your shooting style.

You could also consider the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 or 30 f/1.4 which are much cheaper but still very good alternatives.

Contrary to what two others have said a 35L can take picture you never can take with the zoom, including shooting earlier in the morning and later into the evening and with shallow depth of field at wide or nearly wide settings.
