Your image has been post-processed. You cannot use this as an example of sharpness.

All I would have to do to achieve the same result in increase the structure of fine detail in post processing.

I would have to disagree on some points Russell.... I borrowed a D800, and the sharpness out of the camera is just breathtaking.. Images do turn out very very sharp, and they get even sharper with minimal lightroom/PS adjustments...

I believe the reason of these shots being like that is due to the slow shutter speed.. If you could mount your camera on a very stable tripod, your shots would be different.. The D800 is not magical to enable you to take shots handheld at such a slow shutter speed unless you have crazily good handholding techniques....
