At ISO6400, the D800 is actually ISO4211 and the D4 is actually iSO4388!

A difference of a whopping 0.06 of a stop. Easy to lose perspective when thinking linearly in a logarithmic world, n'est-ce pas?

The difference between ISO6400 and ISO4211 is not .06 of a stop.

No, it's not, it's 0.6 stop, but he was referring to the difference between 4211 and 4388.

Yes, I realise that, and that is why I pointed out that I was camparing the D4/D800 to ISO6400, not to the D4 or the D800 to each other. Why he thought that I'd never know.

The point though is that at 6400 the ISO of the D800 is 6400 to within 1/6 stop according to DPR

Now DPR uses the SOS spec, which isn't what Nikon uses, but nonetheless for a grey card, the ISO calibration of the camera is close to nominal. DPR does it properly testing ISO in JPEG (sRGB) - 'ISO' means nothing in raw.

The outcome of that is that the D800 should give the nominal exposure for 6400, so long as the scene doesn't deviate too much from a grey card. Or if you like, ISO 6400 really is ISO 6400 on a D800.

I guess that is fair enough, but it stuill depends on the tests accuracy and how it compares to other cameras and to "correct" ISO values, that is my point.
