Barrel distortion (the tendency to make straight lines appear slightly bent) is a problem that is more prevalent with zoom lenses rather than primes.

"Perspective distortion" whereby objects toward the edges of the frame appear stretched is a function of the wide field of view, i.e. you can't have a wide field of view without it*.

*unless you have different projection, i.e. fisheye, which offers a wide field of view, doesn't distort the size of objects, but it does bend straight lines...
