Hi There,
Definitely fit the lens hood and if a filter is on, I would remove it also,

Lastly, just be aware about the angle of the sun, just a slight change in angle will sometimes enable you to get get the shot in, also keep up the shutter speed, try to at least double the focal length in shutter speed, that is, shooting 300mm, shutter should be at least 600

Do some hand held tests, using a shutter speed double the focal length and even 3 times your focal length, your images will get sharper
