You're probably seeing less noise because the embedded JPG is highly compressed (you can't select that level for your normal jpg's as 1.2mb for a 20mp image is insane) and the noise in dark areas is reduced because noise takes more space to store. If you looked at the emedded jpg on a full screen it would seem a lot like an oil painting with less noise but also a lot less detail. the latest version of exiftools and dcraw should be able to extract it if you're curious.

and the noise I refer to is the higher background noise most easily seen in really high iso dark compositions. When I set to raw, there is noticeably less of that noise in camera.
