Variable ND filter... what is going on here?

Dear all,

was wondering if some experts here would know what is going on in this photograph. I was on a vacation in Mexico and wishing to take some early morning photography by the beach with long exposure times, put on a recently acquired variable neutral density filter, which I set on maximum (8 stops).

I then got this very displeasing and strange effect of these two triangles of darkness from the top and bottom of the image, pointing at each other...
If I recall correctly, the sun was rising to the left of this photo...
See attached...
Any experts here who can explain this?
Thanks
