NX20 Upgrade Impressions and some high ISO pics

After vacillating for some time over whether to upgrade from an NX10 to an NX20, I had my mind made up by an unexpected tax rebate I picked up an NX20 last week and thought I'd post some initial impressions.

(Purchased from Cambuy.com.au - 859 AUD, equivalent to 560 GBP, 700 EUR, or 886 USD - I think this retailer has been mentioned here before, but given that it's the only time in several months of being here I've found anything to be cheaper in Australia, I thought I'd mention it again!)

  • Build quality - if anything, I'd say that the NX20 feels slightly less sturdy than the NX10, but this is very slight. The "OK" button in the centre of the rear dial seems a bit loose, but I'm probably imagining it. I hadn't used the 18-55 before (my NX10 came second hand with a 30mm) and I feel the 18-55 seems a bit "cheaper" and "plasticky".

  • Ergonomics / controls - I hadn't really expected adding a back dial to make much of a difference, but I was surprised how much it adds to the handling. In an ideal world it would be nice to set this permanently to ISO, but even without customisation it makes certain operations more comfortable. The prominent video button is not an issue - I almost never use video but don't find myself pressing it by accident. I haven't setup custom profiles yet, but I can see this being useful and think the dial modes make more sense than those on the NX10.

  • Articulated screen - I was not hugely bothered by this, I put a screen protector on the screen and figured I would just leave it permanently rotated, but I was surprised how quickly I found it useful (taking photos on a tripod that was below head level without needing to stoop). I expect within a month or two I'll find it indispensable!

  • EVF - seems a lot better than the NX10, but hard to quantify. The design also seems more comfortable against the eye.

  • Wi-fi - Haven't had a chance to play with this yet, will update when I do. Reading the specs I hadn't really noticed that the NX20 gained wi-fi but lost the standard remote control port, which means that it I want to shoot remotely I'll have to work out how the wi-fi works....

I've not had a huge amount of time to experiment, but was keen to see how the NX20 would perform at high ISOs, so I took a quick walk around a nearby museum. Overall I'm quite pleased, particularly compared with the NX10. A selection of pictures at different ISOs are below - more casual snapshots than carefully executed works, but they give an idea of how the camera performs, I hope!

(Post processing in Lightroom. Actually, I need more practice at processing high ISO pictures, having tended to avoid taking them until now, so if you see any issues they could be down to me, rather than the camera!)

Note: I was able to easily reproduce the "overzealous lens correction" and shadow problems discussed previously on this forum, but only in quite artificial test conditions (taking very underexposed ISO 100 shots and boosting them 3-5 stops in pp). If/when I experience significant problems trying to raise shadows in normal usage, I'll post examples, but I'm not going to go hunting for problems :).
