I would have to agree with the idea of waiting a couple of more weeks to see how the D600 looks after Photokina. If you are used to the D90, the D7000 was the camera that basically replaced it.

From the leaked specs at Nikon Rumors it would appear that the D600 will be a FX version of the D7000 and hence may operate in a familar way for you. The $1500 or so that you would save over the D800 could be spent on some FX glass to help get you started down the full frame road without breaking the bank while keeping camera operation fairly similar to what you have been used to.

It is beginning to look like DX cameras may have run their course with FX cameras becoming more cost competitive. Take a look at Thom's latest thoughts on sensor costs, I think he pretty well sums up the situation.
