Re: New 300mm f/4 IS L II likely

I would not be surprised to see one day both the 400mm f5.6 L IS AND a 300mm f4 L IS II announced at the same time. They could share a very similar optical formula and even some of the mechanical components (hood, switches, lens barrel elements).

Even if both these lenses were available I would still likely want the new 300mm as on a 1.6x crop camera it makes a perfect lens for me (almost 500mm equivalent f4 lens) for shooting larger wildlife and close ups. The 1.5m close focusing is a huge benefit and the f4 aperture irreplaceable. I need the 1.4x converter only once in a while for a very good 420mm lens. Like I said before the only things I would really want in order for a new 300mm are:

  • updated IS (the IS of new lenses runs circles around what they could do 20 years ago)

  • upgraded optics (mostly so it would work better with the 1.4x converter the lens original is plenty sharp on its own).

  • full weather sealing (a minor upgrade but would be nice)
