Long and fast mFT zoom is overdue

When I compare the better mFT's (E-M5 and GH2) to APS-C DSLR's, one area they fall short is in the availability of high quality long zooms. In 4/3's look no further than the exceptional 50-200mm f2.8-3.5, along with the 12-60mm f2.8-4 mid-range zoom, both for around $1000 new.

Olympus and Panasonic have shown remarkable things can be accomplished with wide zooms in the affordable 9-18mm and excellent 7-14mm, both far more compact and light than their 4/3's forebears.

In mid-range the only sign of life is the Pan 12-35mm f2 zoom, shorter than many of us would like as a serviceable everyday zoom, and pricier as well. One wonders, had they allowed themselves the latitude of f2.8-4 could they have extended the range while also cutting both weight and price?

As regards the Olympus 12-50mm f3.5-6.3, a nice inexpensive kit lens for walking around purposes, but hardly what many of us had been hoping for from Olympus.

But when one comes to long zooms it's simply a desert out there. The Olympus 75-300mm showed that, yes, long zooms can be put on a diet in size and weight without suffering too much in performance, but at a 2.5X cost premium over its 4/3's equivalent? And it's slow at f4.8-6.7 compared to its 4/3's rival's f4-5.6.

When I compare $1000 cameras (D7000, K5, E-M5), its the lack of fast long zoom options that jumps out in mFT. Primes are fine, but make for an expensive and less flexible way to go about photography than excellent zooms, which used to be an Olympus staple.

Hopefully this has not gone unnoticed and with the upcoming pro-mFT bodies we'll see some superior zooms as well.
