As someone whose used every version of Access since Access 2.0 and has written more than my share of business apps, don't even try it unless you know what you're doing. If your hearts set on a customized application, you had better be able to draw it out (each user form and what you want it to do). If you can do this then it may make sense to pay a programmer $75-$100/hr realzing that it will take a minimum of 40 hrs to build a BASIC application. On the other hand for the same $4k could buy an off the shelf program that you could fit your business into.

In the right hands Access is a very cool program for mid level solutions.
