The easy way to describe it is that the raw burst compression I'm talking about is roughly half of the standard process for lossy MPEG encoding of video. MPEG is fancier in that it does both forward and backward interpolation from key frames (I'm suggesting forward only) and it also does conversion to a different colorspace and frequency domain compression (like JPEG). In fact, you could use MPEG encoding directly and simply add a tag that gives lossless compressed error terms for recomputing the original raws... Kodak did something like that using augmented JPEGs as their raw format.

The point is that algorithms for this are nothing tricky or all that new.
