The word from Mike Rubin, the CoolPix product manager:

Is he an engineer? Is he a lawyer? Has he talked with engineers or lawyers about this particular issue?

The word "may" is purposefully nebulous. It attempts to makes a "is not" into a "is". As far as people using what has become public, it doesn't meet what I understand of reverse engineering. Whom ever discovered/leaked this information may be responsible for reverse engineering. I don't know. Yes, it may void the warranty. If the RAW mode is turned back off, I'm not sure if they can tell or not.

What I would like to know if there is any risk of damaging the camera. Warranty aside, at some level this is my camera. And if there is low risks involved and I have the tools to work with them, I would like to try out the RAW format.
