I pretty much have to agree that the D800 will be a very steep learning curve. The D90 is a fine camera but the technology is older. As the others suggest, look to the higher end consumer model cameras as they will have more and better "automatic" modes. Unless you need really wide angle, the DX series lenses are much cheaper.

Where I'm different than most is when to buy. I'm in high tech and in my opinion buying the older model is buying behind the curve. Nikon and Canon are still moving the technology forward meaningfully with each generation. I would buy the latest consumer camera, and if it's been out for a year or so, I'd wait for the next one.

The suggestion of reading the manual is a great idea. They are posted online so you can read before you buy.
