Wine country is truly photogenic, alas, some of it is in great danger of becoming more 'Fras Canyon'

Yup. We abandoned Napa years ago for the tourist rush, except when visitors demand what they've heard of. Sonoma seemed OK still, and the way we did it (stayed away from the crowds) this time worked for us. We found some nice new wineries, still. Even the old Buena Vista was fun, with a Shakespeare performance. BUT, for food nuts, Napa is still attractive. We stayed rural Sonoma; traveled to Napa just for food.

Other places: We' do love the Andersen Valley for wine tasting, on our way to Mendocino. It was SO quiet a few years ago. Almost always we were the only tasters--good chance to talk to owners. But it shows signs of bustle. Similarly we discovered the little wine valley near Healdsburg (West Dry Creek Road). And now, the town's a destination! Darn the NY Times!
