Welcome to the D700 + 28-105 combo. I used the 28-105 as my primary walk around lens for 3 years with the D700. It performed admirably and nearly always produced excellent image quality. Ultimately, I upgraded to the 24-120 f/4 this past Spring. My reasons for upgrading were:

  • broader zoom range (expecially on the wider end)

  • VR

  • constant aperture

The tradeoffs were:

  • handy macro mode

  • smaller size and weight

I expected slightly better image quality from the 24-120. I am still testing. But so far, I am not really seeing it. Yes the corners are better at wide open apertures. But the 24-120 has some issues in the corners as well. The overall color rendition might be a bit better. The weight is a little bothersome. Mounted on a D700 this is a fairly heavy outfit. And it is just a bit front heavy.
