Yes! Thanks for correcting my typo.

My intuitive way of looking at it has always been the second one you spell out below, i.e., that the magnitude of the focus error (greater for WAs) and the extent to which that error is covered up by DoF (greater for WAs) cancel out so that the net effect of incorrect flange distance is equally bad for both types of lenses.

That's usually the way I think of it for distant subjects as well.

For macro work the "effectiveness" of an extension tube tends to follow the first context a bit more sensibly, but that isn't what we are talking about here.
