I know of it and looked into using/getting one but it would be overkill for what panos I do. I usually hand hold and do a meter scan of the scene, set my camera to manual and hand hold 5 to 7 shots. I stitch them in PSE10 and they look great. Do some touch up and have had several printed on metal done by Bay Photo.

I attended a lecture on the Gigapan. The speaker used it to print huge prints like 5' by 10'. Not my style. My prints end up about 10" by 40" and they look great.

Enjoy it. I'm sure it's fun.
