Disposable only goes so far

Buying a cheap tripod and throwing it away then replacing it when it breaks is fine advice, unless and until it stops you getting the shot (at which point, frustration may hasten the throwing aspect of the equation).

I was reminded of this when I was out with my Dad, shooting the moon. We were using light mirror lenses, so no great strain on a tripod. My mid-range legs and top end ballhead (Manfrotto/Markins) was rock solid. My Dad's cheapie tripod and head would not lock where he wanted, and was distinctly unstable.
