Funny you should ask, I was photographing my daughter's soccer game today. I actually was pleased with suggestions I got from this forum about shooting in M mode, setting f stop and shutter speed, and letting the camera use auto ISO to properly expose the images, this worked well, I shot at f7.1 and at 1/1250. I did notice, like you that I had to add from +0.6 to +1.0 brightness in post (DPP). Also I did MFA on the lens I used (EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM) and that got this lens pin sharp, once again thanks to you forum posters! So in summary, I used M manual mode, set f stop and shutter speed, used Auto ISO, and added any needed brightness in post. I also experimented with Evaluative, partial, spot and center weighted average metering. I think spot and evaluative modes did the best, but I need to experiment more with them....
