The same case was thrown out in the UK because UK patent law does not recognise patents that are "trivial", especially with respect to software. Patenting the "styling" of something, or patenting software, is particularly tricky. In UK law, the styling is more of a trademark infringement (in which case the two have to be near identical) and software is more of copyright issue, in that the algortihm not the outcome is the issue.

US patent law effectively stifles competition, and strangely always seems to be used to go after foreign companies. A bit like their banking regulations.

Apple sued Microsoft over the idea of a "window based" operating system, only it turned out the idea was patented by Xerox not Apple. Apple are certainly not above borrowing a few ideas.

I would not be surprised if Apple find themselves on the end of some retaliatory measures by far-east companies. It certainly won't do much for their market share in those markets wheras removing Samsung products from the US market is NOT good for US consumers in any way, shape or form.
