E-3 going strong: VERSAILLES, France (PHOTOS)

Late July we drove to the south of France and made a stop along the way in Versailles.

We had visited Paris before on a few occasions, but had never gone to the suburb that is home to Louis XIV's magnificently decadent Palace and Gardens.

I dunno why exactly, but I decided not to take the E-M5 or E-5 for the trip, but give my E-3 some exercize. Lenses were :

  • the ZD12-60mm for all normal focal lengths

  • the ZD7-14mm for some UWA

  • the ZD70-300mm (newly acquired for use mostly on the E-M5, but of course a capable FT lens).

We had a hot but great day under blue skies with plenty of light.

Versailles is a special place: the evidence of what can happen with too much money in too few hands. Like: build a palace with so many rooms that it becomes unpleasant to live in, resulting in the building of a smaller palace in the gardens. Or like: dig a cruciform canal form of almost 1 mile long as a backdrop to the palace, on which mock naval battles were held as entertainment.

Tip: Use Google Earth with satellite view (search "Versailles, France") to get an idea of the scale and magnitude of the place.

I'll include some impressions in this post, but a bigger gallery can be found here:

entry gate:

a corridor lined with predecessors of the king:

in a grand hall filled with paintings depicting France's moments of military glory:

first of many fountains and the Grand Canal towards the far distance:

the house-high hedges of the formal garden are constantly being trimmed:

when I say "house-high", I really mean that:

Marie-Antoinette thought it was a fun idea to have a hamlet built in the gardens, with real people living in it, as a real-life doll house:

compressed view from the far side of the Grand Canal towards the Palace:

a bike is a good idea to make the tour of the Grand Canal:

a friendly american guy was kind enough to make this one of my son and me (I returned the favour):
