Makes you wonder how long that sensor in the D5100 will keep working?

True enough, although semiconductor manufacturing is different from manufacture of assembled goods.

My only two Canon cameras never made it past the first year. Meaningless on a

larger or current scale, unless you also believe the D800 issues are an indication of
the products in general.

I think the D800 issues are of concern, at least for that camera model. If it's statistically improbable to get an item with a short life in the first place, it gets even more improbable to get two. (Would you keep buying car brand X if two separate models fell to pieces shortly after their warranties ended, or would you establish a connection?) I think Sony still makes some decent products, but their quality doesn't appear to be what it was in times past.

Not trying to be inflammatory here, but questions of Sony reliability do figure into my decisions about purchasing (or not) Sony cameras and other products.
