Hi!

  • Raw files are uncompressed and thus around 22 MB, while on other cameras they occupy only around 12 MB with lossless compression. (Am aware that i could/should convert them to much more economical DNG straight off the card.)

Yes, for some reason Samsung does not compress the raw files. Also, the raw files have a copy of the JPEG at full res inside, so it makes no sense to do raw + JPEG. You can extract the JPEG with dcraw.

Interesting, didn't know that. Even though i wouldn't want to install dcraw just for that - just run the raws through DNG Converter straight from the card.
Not compressing the raw files is a somewhat offensive, unfriendly decision.

  • It seems that JPEGs get distortion corrections, while raws don't (on Panasonic, even raws are distortion-corrected, but still can be viewed uncorrected depending on software) (aware that new ACRs distortion-correct EX1F files with one or two clicks automatically, there is a lens profile there).

on Panasonic and Samsung there is no distortion correction done in the raw files. What they do is that they store the correction parameters inside the raw file and some converters apply them (without asking) and some others don't.

Yes, that's what i meant actually. I'd love the Samsung raws to contain the math for distortion correction just like Panasonic raw files (even though i wish that correction could easily be turned off inside ACR, so actually Samsung has an advantage, because unlike with Panasonic raws you can easily switch between original and un-distorted raws within ACR).
