I am amazed at the price difference between FX and DX sensor camera bodies. Is an FX sensor really $1500-$2000 more to produce than a DX sensor?

Digital camera technology is not new and it would seem that at this point economy of scale would dictate that a FX size sensor would not be that much more expensive to manufacture.

Are they only charging such high costs for FX bodies because the market dictates that they can?
