220 roll film was the same width as 120. Most of the paper backing was eliminated to allow a longer roll of film, giving more shots, in the same external size. Many medium format cameras could use both 120 & 220.

Kodak, being Kodak, had its own version, called 620, which gave the same image sizes as 120. Kodak loved to create unnecessary new film types, like Disk, APS, etc.
