T4i / 650D Autofocus problem

Hello. I am new to the forms and to shooting withv a DSLR.

Long story short. I have an two cameras: the SX 40 and the 650D.

650D lens is 18-55mm EF-S IS II

My question / problem is: Is it normal for a DSLR to produce slightly unfocused images in any shooting mode? that is live view or with the view finder.

The one with the plannt was taken with the 650D using the view finder and using the center auto focus point

The one with the controller was taken with the SX 40. Both were similar in that I pretty much just set the shutter speed and aperture I liked and took the picture.

For the 650D it seems to "miss" the subject entirely in auto focus quite a bit where as the SX 40 locks on nearly every time. So, again, is this just the difference between a point and shoot and a DSLR or is this poor autofocus (or lenses)?
