Sensor technology is starting to get towards the quantum limitations.

Quantum efficiency for a back thinned photogate is about 60% (about 70% of theoretical limit)
Johnson noise is less than 10 percent above the theoretical limit
Readout noise is about 6-14 e- for current µ4/3/ASP-C/FF sensors
Well depth is intrinsically (sic) limited by the semiconductor material
CCD transfer efficiency exceeds 99.999%

Readout noise is about the only place for significant improvement (camera phone sensors are achieving about 1-3 e-).

What has been achieved is quite remarkable.

Perhaps we should now start research into making 'half-electrons'!
