Mine has never done that, but I bought mine used.

First, since it is mechanically coupled, I would turn the focus end to end manually a couple times then try again (if it happens again).

Also, was it either really hot or cold? Greases only work well over a certain temperature range, so if it was much below 32 F or above 85 F I could see that being a possible problem.

I am not sure what type of sonic motor the lens uses, a ring type or a micro motor, but I would guess the former.

I think the point is you shouldn't be able to hear an ultrasonic motor, by definition it is using a frequency above your hearing threshold. If you can hear it easily there is probably something wrong, other than some mechanical noises from the pieces moving.
