That was the conclusion of my comparison test. And that was at close range - the 200-400 IQ is not as good at long range.

This either means that the 300 f/4 is a very good deal or the 200-400 is over-priced for what you get.

Yes 300AFS is a good deal

I am assuming the 300 f/4 is better than the 70-200 + 1.4 or 2.0 TC, right? My tele zoom is the 80-200 f/2.8 (couldnt afford the 70-200) and I really like the 80-200, but I dunno about putting the kenko TC on that one.

300 f/4 is much better IMHO than 70-200 VRII with TC1.4. A few crops from test shots with 70-200 / 300 below:
