I really like your accurate approach.

(And I cannot understand many people here who can shoot JPG since there is no camera to do this)

Exposure was set when the capture was made. Adobe (and others) mislabel the 'brightness adjust' slider, but it does nothing to the 'exposure' at all, it just changes the tone mapping. This kind of remapping needs a non-linear tone curve, to squeeze all of the capture DR into the 8 stops or so available in the output image.
