Film vs sensor?

Sorry if this is dumb. But why is it that the ability of my 5d ii sensor to capture light seems, as i remember, exactly the same as when i had my nikon fm2 using film? In other words, on a cloudy day im still at iso 400 or more. The two mediums couldnt be more different and surely technology could enable us to capture noise free images virtually in the dark! Is there another marketing conspiracy? Ha ha.
