650D: AF for videos, do I really need that? (vs 60D?)
Aug 12, 2012
Hello, everyone
Allow me to introduce myself: Marco, long time lurker, first time poster. I own a Canon 400D/Xti which has served me well, but I'd now like to replace it, and I'm trying to decide what with. I have never made videos, but I'd like to give it a serious try (If I learn how to ), although my main interest will still be pictures - let's say 80% pictures and 20% video.
I don't want to turn this into the next "650D vs 60D" thread, but I'm down to that too I've read all the threads and specs I've came across, and (body type, buffer and battery aside) they kind of look pretty similar to me, IQ wise. AF (for pics) should be about the same, right? The 650D has those night mode and HDR functions, but I probably wouldn't use them that much anyway. The 650D can get to higher ISO, but noise levels look about the same to me. Touch screen is a nice touch, but... I can probably do without.
To sum it up, if I'm not forgetting anything - am I? - I think I'm probably closer to the 60D, except maybe for the continuous AF for videos. Since I've never used a video function on a DSLR, I have no idea how useful that would be in common use. Those of you who do lots of videos, have you ever found yourselves wanting to have it on your cameras, or is that something one can do without by focusing manually?
I've watched a couple of videos of the continuous AF in use, and franlky it didn't look perfect, it did quite some focus hunting... Is that so nice to have that I should consider buying another "entry level" (although, compared to my 400D, the 650D looks like NASA technology), or should I go to the 60D without second thoughts?
Thanks in advance for any help you can give!
Marco
