Number of inks used with different paper types
I would like just to share some information, which can probably be interesting to the forum. In a recent thread:
there is a link to the service manual of Epson R800:
posted by Jay Reeves (thanks a lot, Jay). Following the link one gets the pdf file of this service manual but by trying only the first part of the address:
one gets to the root folder containing many other folders with service manuals (not only for printers). Now, for me this is already interesting enough, but what I found was that in the Service Manual for my printer (Pixma iP8500), there is a subsection describing which from the eight inks are used with which media type and also depending on the print quality selected in the driver. I have read before (nifty-stuff I think, and also in this forum) that all 8 inks are used only with certain media types, but now I know also when is the system using only 4 or 6 or 7 inks and at which resolution. Also there is information how much ink (strangely given in grams and not in ml) is used during the different cleaning cycles.
I am not sure whether such a section is existing also for the other printers, but I suppose that the information for iP8500 is valid for all 8 ink BCI and CLI systems. At least for the common media types. I also wonder where does this information come from because I see such a section for the first time in the service manual of iP8500.
Anyway, now I know why the grayscale option, even with Plane Paper media type results in some color casts. The only way to make the rpinter use ONLY The BK ink is to use the Plain Paper media type AND the draft or the number 5 from the Custom types print quality. In all other cases the printer is using 4 inks.
