I own both G1X and G12 - but I won't use the viewfinder on either. If you want a really usable viewfinder and IQ equivalent (IMO) to the G12 and a bit smaller than the G12, then consider the Panasonic LX5 with the optional EVF that fits in the hotshoe. The resolution of the EVF is not the greatest but it does show all of the camera settings and I found it quite useful. The LX5 also has is a bit wider at the wide end (I think 24mm) if that's important to you and is very fast focusing.

I loved the photos I was getting with the G12 but as soon as I learned about the LX5 + EVF I jumped on that (I have closeup vision problems so using an LCD screen is a challenge for me).

Of course when I learned about the G1X I jumped on that for the IQ and I'm very pleased with that. But the G1X will probably take up a large chunk of space in your glove box.
