I did read them. I think it's always better to work in layers (adjustment layers, not destructive levels adjustments directly to pixel layers). I also prefer to use masks when the subject is already correctly exposed -- rather than make a global adjustment to brighten the background, and then a second midtones adjustment to compensate for the effect on the subject.
