I'm not an event shooter but if I was, I don't think there would be a problem missing the 55-70mm range if using two bodies and a 17-55 and 70-200. Compared to using two FX bodies with a 24-70 and 70-200, you lose that small portion of coverage (82-105mm equivalent) but gain 200-300mm which, depending on the venue, could be really advantageous or just wasted focal length. Either way, you don't give up much but you don't save any weight either compared to the FX setup.

Ideally I would like to live with a one camera setup. However, if Nikon releases a D400 sometime I might keep the D300 as a second body...

If you don't need the 200-300mm range, have you considered a second FX body (used D700 perhaps) to dedicate to the 70-200?

If I spawn money I would rather like to spend it on a camera I constantly use.

And I would be afraid, that I want a 2,8 24-70 and a 1,8 85 if I owned a D700
