Mirrorless is growing market share fast... Pentax needs a solid mirrorless line.
K-01 and Q are just not competitive in the market place.

They can be made competitive, if necessary.

Ummm... it's necessary right now.

No, it's not.
Right now what's necessary is a (more) complete K-mount product line.

So you think Pentax will double sales by focusing on the market that has the least growth?
Excellent strategy!

They are focusing on the market on which they can grow the best.

Mirrorless are not ignored, however they're working on their own solution (which is the same good old K-mount)

Maybe your m4/3 market:

  • would not allow them a high enough revenue stream (how's Olympus doing?)

  • would be too difficult to compete in

  • it's closed to them, m4/3 being a proprietary standard

  • does not guarantee any market share for a newcomer

Now these are very good points.

It may be that Pentax should consider a "Micro K" mount using a sensor similar in size to the M4/3 which allows use of compact lenses?
Good enough to get great IQ while allowing the lenses to be compact and light.
Alex... we're onto something!

They should also make a high tech mount that allows K mount lenses to be attached with full AF functionality.
A completely proprietary Pentax system.

While an APS-C (1) "micro-K" solution was plausible, the K-01 and other "clues" like the prototype K-mount lens which protrudes inside the mount tells us Pentax already decided on a solution.

(1) Sharing sensors with the DSLR line would reduce the costs, thus APS-C and not m4/3

M4/3 has just come of age... keep watching this space...

You mean, you will spam the Pentax DSLR Talk forum with more of this lesser system? FFS...

Alex! You hurt my feelings! Spam? Ouch!

Ok... if anyone else thinks my suggestions are merely spam, I promise to stop contributing to this post.

Talks about m4/3 in the Pentax DSLR Talk forum are at least off topic.

We're not off topic if we are considering competition and how Pentax can double sales.

But m4/3 was never an option, so it's off topic. Unless the topic is "things that just won't happen".

We want Pentax to be profitable so it can still sell you K-mount, right?

Hold your horses. You were just saying Pentax should jump to m4/3 - thus helping m4/3 competing against the K-mount; how's that helping the K-mount?

A great selling feature for the K-5 and K-30 is the weather resistance.

The Olympus E-M5 is also weather resistant - and the upcoming Panasonic GH-3 is rumoured to have a weather resistant body... Pentax advantage lost.

Really? The K-30 is more affordable and not by a small margin.

You are right, the K-30 is MUCH cheaper than the Olympus E-M5.
In Hong Kong, the K-30 bodies have already been discounted to $AU640.
The same trader is selling the E-M5 body for $AU1,016.
You see? It is not always about price.

It is about price, since Pentax has the most affordable weather sealing kit.

The K-30 is MUCH cheaper, has a larger sensor and still sells less units than the E-M5.

The K-30 was barely launched out on the market and there still are supply issues; it's also sold besides the similarly priced, near EOL K-5.
Does the Olympus OM-G sell in higher quantities than both K-30 and K-5?

Yes. In Melbourne camera stores the OM-D is outselling K-5 and K-30 combined.

Melbourne? Really?

In Bucharest, the OM-D doesn't sell at all (which is about as relevant as what's happening in Melbourne).

No... sales in Melbourne and Bucharest are both relevant.

Both are irrelevant on a global scale.

...and I thought you were a Romanian patriot!?
All sales have some relevance.
For example, what sells in Melbourne will usually sell in Sydney and Brisbane.
What sells in Romania may also be relevent for other Eastern European markets.

They're very small markets, being mere towns. If you start talking about Australia, well... but even then, we're not talking about global scale.

If OM-D has zero sales in Bucharest as you suggest:
1. It is unavailable for sale in Bucharest; or
2. You have made a very inaccurate generalisation.

It is definitely available, and the sales are not zero but abysmal.

If it's available in Bucharest, it is selling or perhaps sold out?

I could go and buy it today, if I were to suddenly go mad.

Hahaha... let's hope that does not happen!
I would miss you!

My mental health is in check, no way that would happen.

It is not even close.

I'm declaring Pentax K-30+K-5 duo globally beat Olympus OM-G by a large margin, based on what's happening on Bucharest.

Hahaha... well done!
Of course you are right because OM-D have zero sales in Bucharest, right?

Unfortunately I can't claim Pentax is doing infinitely better (or crash with an "division by zero"error)

Well... we all want Pentax to thrive... on this we all agree!

He he... glad to find a common point.

Alex
