Besides trigger, does a PC sync cord exchange additional data (Nikon system)?

Hi,

I'm a veteran Nikon D300/SB800 shooter. Recently I've purchased a flash bracket, mounted the SB800 unit on it and connected it to the camera using a sync cord (first time I'm using a sync cord).

Unless I did something wrong (please enlighten me in this case) I've found that, while connected in the above manner the SB800:

  1. Isn't aware of the camera's ISO settings

  2. Won't support TTL/BL mode

  3. While the SB800 screen shows it's in TTL mode, the flash seems (to me) to fire in manual mode.

  4. Supports flash photography while the SB800 is in manual, auto, and GN modes.

Am I correct assuming that the sync cord does not support the exchange of any data (between the camera and flash) except for triggering the flash?
