Help with D800 & SB910

Friends,

Just bought a flash (SB-910) for my D800. I am using it with camera set-up @ 100 ISO (not AUTO-ISO) and A mode, and no exposure comp. Flash is set on iTTL BL, bounced (ceiling or side walls).
Using these setting for family pictures indoor.

I thought that these settings would allow the flash to adequately light the subjects but unfortunately the result is a totally overpowering light. It feels like even a deer would have too much choice about where to look given how much light there is .

No doubt I am doing something wrong here but can't find out what from the 2 manuals.
Any suggestion welcome... Thx in advance
