D800 with the Nikon 17-55 2.8 DX Lens

I've been debating about selling my 17-55 2.8 for the 24-70 2.8 because as a full frame camera it gives me the best utilization of the D800; I've read all of arguments on why this is best. However, I have mixed feelings now and I have decided to keep the 17-55 and not worry about the 24-70. Why? The 17-55 performs pretty good on the D800. I can use it in full frame mode for the full 36MP but I do lose the wider end of the lens up to about 28mm then it become useful (so in effect it becomes a 28-55mm lens covering the entire frame).

However, I am loving how it performs on the 1.2x Crop mode (instead of the DX mode) which becomes useful at 20mm with no vignetting (effective 24mm) through 55mm. In essence, effective coverage of 24-66mm in the 1.2x Crop Mode producing a 25.1MP image is nothing to sneeze at and the 17-55 resolves quite well on the D800.

So my question is do I sell and lose about $600 on the 17-55 from original purchase price then spend $1900 for the 24-70 for a slight gain in coverage for my type of shooting? Not at this time. But I am sure eventually I will. Right now I am going to enjoy my 17-55 2.8 on my D800 as well as my prime lenses.

These are some handheld test shots; they are sharp, in focus and usable. There is a catch, the corners are a little soft. If anyone is interested, I can upload full resolution files on SmugMug for you to check out.

This is shot at 17mm on the 1.2crop factor just so you can see what it looks like.

This is shot at 24mm and it resolves nicely.

This is a 100% crop from the above shot.
