Kenko Pro 300 2x w/70-200mm f/4 IS - Please set the record straight!

OK, so I have read a ton and have many conflicting reports on this Lens/Tele combo...

Kenko Pro 300 2x w/70-200mm f/4 IS

can someone help me set the record straight on this?

1) Will AF be disabled (do i have to do the tape trick) or does that only apply to Canon Teleconverters?

2) If I get the Kenko, should I get the DG or DGX?

3) How much of the hit will the AF speed take (Center point only on a 5D2)?

4) Image quality wide open? Stopped down?

I might get the 1.4x, but if I can 'live' with the performance of the 2x, I'd prefer the 2X of course. Thanks all!!
