Digital camera for very long exposures?

Both of my Nikons have a long exposure noise reduction. It work very well. The downside of that is if you take a 30 minute exposure, it will take 30 minutes to process and the camera has to sit idle to do that.
Last night I have tried my old D40 and 30min. exposure came out almost noise free even with no NR! Colors and DR also look very good. Fresh charged battery allowed me 4 x 30 min. shots. Will keep my D40 for this - such a wonderful camera! Will post my test sample later.
BTW is it any way to push exposure on D40 over 30 min. limit?
