I doubt consumer input had much to do with what the K30 ended up being. I think it is a natural and straightforward response to three factors:

1) To build up a brand image, they need to play to their strengths, and one strength strongly identified with Pentax is weather sealing, especially when offered at a lower price point than the competition. Plus, before Hoya, their strength was to in general have more pro features per dollar.

2) The K-01 is now the bottom end, so it no longer makes as much sense to make a really stripped down traditional DSLR; they'd be too self-competitive.

3) With Ricoh they can now put some actual effort and creativity into development.

With those circumstances, coming up with the K30 is kind of an obvious move (though one that a lot of companies will still miss).

However it arose, I'm sure it'll be a hit.
