Basically I visualized what I thought the final image should look like. To me it was all about depth and space. It had an Ansel Adams feel to it. So I thought in terms of contrast of tones - dark for the foreground and lighter in the distance (aerial perspective).

So I duplicated the image into several layers. Then did adjustments---> black and white on each layer choosing the best black and white filter for each area of the photo on each layer from fore ground to back ground.

Then erased each section of each layer that I didn't like leaving a section in each layer that I did like.
Then collapsed the layers into one image.

Then duplicated that image into several layers and changed each mode layer to multiply or screen in order to further intensify the feeling of space and contrast. Again erased the bits I didn't need on each layer. And finally collapse the layers into one image.

Then a bit of local dodging and burning to tweak the final effect.
