The first thing I would advise is to use the menu to take focus function away from the shutter button and only use the AF button for focus. Otherwise every time you take a burt you have to re-acquire focus. Other than that, ask any good photogrpaher and they will all give a different answer! Personally, I do not get on with 3D tracking. I tend to mostly use 21 point. Slow, normal etc only really matters when there is a danger of objects getting in the way of your subject, which does not seem likely in your scenario.

I would say to dial in the settings roughly as above, then forget about them since the camera will cope. Then just concentrate on technique. Failing that, get a slower dog!
