It is, but not in this case. Lloyd bought his 1.4G he liked it so much. I don't think his sample is a dud, and he doesn't say the 1.4G is inferior - it is a focus shift issue - both are crazy sharp, the question is on what and when.

Thirdly, I would not part with my 1.4G. It is one of the highest resolving lenses for a 35mm camera. Check out Photozone.
